Noun Functions

Noun Functions là những loại từ được sử dụng như danh từ (nouns), có nghĩa là có thể làm chủ từ (subjects), túc từ (objects) và bổ ngữ (complements). Chủ từ đứng đầu một câu hoàn chỉnh và làm chủ ngữ trong câu. Túc từ đứng sau tha động từ (Transitive Verbs) hoặc sau giới từ (Prepositions). Bổ ngữ đứng sau động từ nối (Linking Verbs) để thêm nghĩa cho chủ từ; hoặc sau một số động từ khác (VF9) để thêm nghĩa cho túc từ.

Noun Functions gồm những loại sau đây:
1. Nouns (danh từ)

Ví dụ 3 chức năng S-0-C của danh từ:

- The earth is round (danh từ làm chủ từ trong câu, VF₃).
- We live on earth (danh từ làm túc từ của giới từ, VF₁).
- We call the earth the green planet (danh từ "the green planet" bổ nghĩa cho "the earth", VF₉).

2. Pronouns (đại từ)

Ví dụ:

- Who can live on air? (đại từ làm chủ ngữ, VF₁).
- To save the earth is to save yourselves (đại từ làm túc từ, VF₂).
- The earth is ours (đại từ làm bổ ngữ, VF₃).

3. Gerunds (danh động từ): V-ing.

Ví dụ:

- Blogging is more and more popular (danh động từ làm chủ từ, VF₃).
- I get addicted to surfing the Internet (danh động từ làm túc từ, VF₃).
- My hobby is travelling (danh động từ làm bổ ngữ, VF₃)

4. Noun phrases (nhóm danh từ): bao gồm 3 loại

4.1. to-inf hoặc V-ing phrases

Ví dụ:

- "To be or not to be" is a famous quote from Shakespears' writings (nhóm danh từ làm chủ từ, VF₃).
- You can improve your English by listening to English songs in your free time (nhóm danh từ làm túc từ, VF₂).
- It is our duty to prevent Vietnamese language from disappearing (nhóm danh từ làm bổ ngữ, VF₃).

4.2. Whether/ If + to-inf

Ví dụ:

- Whether to cut down the on line schedule is my indecision (nhóm danh từ làm chủ từ, VF₃).
- A good person never wonders whether to do good things (nhóm danh từ làm túc từ, VF₂).
- My question is whether to write more English lessons or just tips in general (nhóm danh từ làm bổ ngữ, VF₃).

4.3. Question word + to-inf

Ví dụ:

- What to do or how to do it is more important? (nhóm danh từ làm chủ từ, VF₃).
- Good parents should tell their children how to treat each other well (nhóm danh từ làm túc từ, VF₄).
- We are electing good people who to become our representatives (nhóm danh từ làm bổ ngữ, VF₉).

5. Noun Clauses (mệnh đề danh từ): gồm 3 loại

5.1. That + VF

Ví dụ:

- That I need exercising and losing weight is urgent (mệnh đề danh từ làm chủ từ, VF₃).
- The scientist said that the ozone layers are in danger (mệnh đề danh từ làm túc từ, VF₂).
- The truth is that freedom is not free (mệnh đề danh từ làm bổ ngữ, VF₃).

5.2. Whether/ If + VF

Ví dụ:

- Whether I'm good at English grammar concerns the audience, doesn't it? (mệnh đề danh từ làm chủ từ, VF₃).
- Uncle Ho asked whether his voice was clear enough (mệnh đề danh từ làm túc từ, VF₂).
- The clue is whether you are willing to learn new things (mệnh đề danh từ làm bổ ngữ, VF₃).

5.3. Question word + VF

Ví dụ:

- Why a lot of teenagers get addicted to the Internet is easy to understand (mệnh đề danh từ làm chủ từ, VF₃).
- Ask not what the country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country (mệnh đề danh từ làm túc từ, VF₂).
- My concern is how you have enjoyed this lesson (mệnh đề danh từ làm bổ ngữ, VF₃).
